Oversharing Leaks Energy: Maintaining our Right to Privacy

"It’s important to realize the difference between hiding information out of shame and making a conscious decision to maintain privacy."

Today I want to delve into a topic that has given me increasing strength over the years, and that is privacy. I’ve recently been reminded of the profound connection between privacy, PTSD, and mental well-being. In today’s discourse, where sharing personal experiences has become increasingly common, especially on social media, it’s crucial to reflect on the intricate relationship between privacy, mental well-being, and healing from trauma. Over time, I’ve come to recognize privacy not merely as a boundary, but as a wellspring of personal resilience and empowerment. In a world that often feels overwhelming, I believe our privacy is not just a shield, but a source of personal strength.

While sharing in therapy or safe places for that purpose is both necessary and desirable, I’ve come to realize that oversharing  outside of those designated spaces can exacerbate our struggles and slow our healing. Willingly, or unknowingly, we can allow a piece of our fragile energy to slip away with each revelation.

I’ve found that reclaiming privacy is an act of self-empowerment because it comes from a place of choice, where I decide what to share and when. It’s important to realize the difference between hiding information out of shame and making a conscious decision to maintain privacy. It entails a deliberate choice to determine what we share and with whom.Establishing boundaries isn’t just about protecting information, it’s also about safeguarding mental energy and vitality.

Privacy serves as a potent instrument in nurturing a balanced and fortified mental landscape. By cultivating an awareness of the value of conserving our energy and safeguarding our privacy, as well as fostering supportive environments for appropriate disclosure, we take significant strides toward holistic well-being. Maintaining privacy is a powerful tool in the pursuit of a balanced and nurtured mental space.

Cultivating the understanding and significance of guarding our energy, protecting our privacy, and supporting one another in the appropriate venues is a step further in the journey toward well-being. Giving ourselves permission and even celebrating our right to maintain privacy can be a source of strength.

Here’s to Hope,

Maryclara
